Wonder Woman faces Hades’ arena, bringing her own twist to the tale of Persephone with a focus on action and strategy.
Dive into Diana’s challenges both past and present, offering insight into both her character growth and consistency.
Before reading this week’s Absolute Wonder Woman, it would be worth brushing up on the legend of Persephone. Yes, yes, you have to do homework to read a comic, but still. Persephone lived in a world of perpetual summer, her mother was Demeter, goddess of plant life. Hades, god of hell, took Persephone, and in her absence, she saw the world’s plantlife die and people go hungry. Persephone, who had fallen in love with her captor and was now Queen of the Underworld, missed her mother and the world above, and knew that if she ate or drank anything there, she would have to stay forever. Demeter learned of Persephone’s fate and demanded her return. On her way home, she ate six seeds from a pomegranate. And so, after she returned and the world came back to life, she would spend six months in hell, which would bring autumn and winter to the world, until she returned in the spring. And that’s how we get seasons. Who knew studying the classics forty years ago would come in so handy?
Anyway, it’s the tale that Persephone tells young Diana on the Isle of Hades at the opening of this Wednesday’s Absolute Wonder Woman #7 by Kelly Thompson, Mattia De Iulis and Dustin Nguyen, so it is worth knowing. The story of the Princess and the Tiger, you will get in full… well, as much as you are allowed to know, that is.
And then Wonder Woman gets to play out her own version in Hades’ arena.
Though it does seem to involve a lot more punching.
And she gets to play out her own very special version of the Princess And The Tiger, especially designed for her…
But along with the stress and trauma of the modern day, we also get a look back at the issues Diana used to have to deal with.
To be fair, not that much has changed…
