The following contains major spoilers for Justice League Unlimited #2, on sale now from DC Comics.

One of the most powerful heroes in the DC Universe is only half the powerhouse he used to be.

Justice League Unlimited #2 finds numerous members of the eponymous team investigating the seemingly alien threat that has recently appeared. Among these formidable figures are Martian Manhunter and Doctor Occult, who have paired off to slink through dark, dank caves in search of answers. Along the way, the former begrudgingly reveals that, ever since Amanda Waller’s war against the heroes of the world, he hasn’t been able to access all of his abilities, and he doesn’t know if he ever will again.

J’onn J’onzz, better known as the Martian Manhunter, made his comic book debut all the way back in 1955’s Detective Comics #225 in Joseph Samachson, Jack Miller, and Joe Certa’s closing story, “Manhunter from Mars: The Strange Experiment of Dr. Erdel.” This introduced the character as an unwitting visitor brought to Earth through the experiments of the story’s titular Doctor Erdel. Tragically, the kind scientist’s heart couldn’t handle the shock of what had happened, at least not for long, leaving the shapeshifting alien stranded on Earth where he would make a life for himself as one of its mightiest heroes.

The Martian Manhunter was just one of many heroes who have found themselves personally reeling from the effects of Amanda Waller’s war on the likes of the Justice League. By using an army of advanced Amazo androids, Waller was able to steal away the powers of countless heroes, villains, and random metahumans, seemingly on a permanent basis. Although the heroes ultimately discovered a way to retrieve those powers, they had no way of directing them once they were stripped from the Amazos. As such, not every set of powers made their way back to their respective owner, leaving everyone from Plastic Man to Lois Lane struggling to figure out what to do next.

Batman’s New Enemy Is Untouchable for the Most Horrifying Reason of All

Batman: Dark Patterns is introducing an entire new slate of serial killers to Gotham City, and the first of them might just be the worst of them.

Richard Occult has been a part of the DC Universe for so long that he is arguably the publisher’s very first superhero. The character was introduced in Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster’s “Doctor Occult: The Vampire Master, Part 1,” from the pages of 1935’s New Fun Comics #6. An acclaimed investigator and mage all the same, Doctor Occult is frequently seen fighting the forces of evil alongside his partner and love interest, Rose Psychic. In his nearly ninety years of heroics, Doctor Occult has been a part of multiple super teams including the All-Star Squadron, Sentinels of Magic, Trenchcoat Brigade, and even the Justice Society of America. With the recent formation of the Justice League Unlimited, Doctor Occult has yet another roster to add his name to, as well as a bigger circle of allies than ever before.
