Jason Momoa has signed on to play Lobo in James Gunn’s DC Universe. The character will make his motion picture debut in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Momoa previously played Aquaman in the DC Universe.
Forget Aquaman, DC Comics has a new use for Jason Momoa. In a blockbuster announcement years in the making, the entertainment juggernaut officially confirmed Jason Momoa as Lobo, the wise-cracking antihero with a penchant for profanity. According to reports, Momoa has signed on to play the character in the upcoming Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow instalment, which will begin production in 2025.
The upcoming film will mark the official motion picture debut of the character, who is set to play a major role in James Gunn’s new DC Universe. The superhero mogul, who previously helmed a series of Marvel flicks, took the DC reins in October 2022 when he and producer Peter Safran were named co-CEOs of DC Studios. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is set to be the duo’s second major instalment in the reboot project, with the David Corenswet-led Superman film slated to hit the big screen on 11 July 2025.
For DC fans, the casting confirmation comes after years of rumours and speculation. Momoa has been linked to the character since before Gunn and Safran joined the DC team and has even outwardly expressed a desire to play the antihero on numerous occasions. Even his confirmation on social media was a direct reference to his long-standing dream of bringing Lobo to life. Taking it to Instagram, Momoa confirmed the announcement by sharing a quote from an interview conducted during his Aquaman 2 press tour.

“I collect comics, and I don’t do so much anymore, but he was always my favourite, and I always wanted to play Lobo because I’m like, ‘Hello? It’s the perfect role.’ I mean, listen. If they call and ask me to play him, it’s a fuck yeah. I haven’t received that call, so I don’t want to put any fake news out there, but if they ever call me and ask me to play, or ask me to audition, I’m there.”
As a character, Lobo represents an interesting on-screen prospect, and Momoa certainly fits the bill visually. Created by writer Roger Slifer and artist Keith Giffen, the brash and brazen bounty hunter is decidedly less PG than much of the superhero company’s existing IP. An alien antihero from the planet Czarnia renowned for his violent nature, superhuman strength and regenerative abilities, Lobo is DC’s answer to Marvel’s Deadpool. Moreover, Gunn will be hoping he’s the answer to DC’s problems.

The entertainment company’s last five blockbuster releases have failed to make a dent in the box office standings. The Dwayne Johnson-led Black Adam was slammed by critics, Blue Beetle struggled to turn a profit on its reported USD$125 million budget, while the Ezra Miller-helmed Flash film suffered from a slate of controversies and legal troubles in the lead-up to the release. Momoa’s recent Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom also struggled to satisfy audiences, scoring a meagre 33 per cent freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will star Milly Alcock as the protagonist hero, Kara Zor-El, while Craig Gillespie has been confirmed to direct. Production is expected to begin on January 13, with the film targeting a theatrical release of 26 June 2026. No plot details have been confirmed, but Gunn has previously teased that this new Supergirl is “much more hardcore” than prior iterations of the character.
