Welcome back to Upcoming Comics! With the marketing push for the upcoming Superman movie shifting into full swing, it’s almost funny to think about just how much is riding on its success. DC as a brand has a lot of baggage right now and I think a lot of audiences are waiting to see what this new universe looks like before deciding whether they’re on board or not. For good or ill, everything rests on James Gunn, so I can’t imagine the amount of pressure he must be under. With that in mind, let’s take a look at the lower stakes world of comics.
Upcoming Comics
Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #38
“We Are Yesterday” part one of six. The sinister psychic powers of the devious Gorilla Grodd have the Man of Steel and the Dark Knight in their sights, but all is not as it seems to be! There’s something strange going on here…some monkey business that the World’s Finest can’t quite put a finger on. It’s almost as if this Gorilla Grodd has…knowledge of the future?
Written By: Mark Waid
Art By: Clayton Henry
Thoughts: Time for the first crossover of the All-In era, and since it’s both Justice League and World’s Finest, Akash and I will be tag teaming the debut.
Batman News Critic: Jackson and Akash
Detective Comics #1096
Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. Batman has never particularly abided by that adage—at least, he didn’t think he did. But now, as his latest case veers closer and closer into deeply personal territory for Bruce Wayne, he fears that he may have been unwittingly keeping an enemy very, very close. Tom Taylor and Mikel Janín’s smash-hit run continues in this can’t-miss issue!
Written By: Tom Taylor
Art By: Mikel Janin
Thoughts: The arc’s finale is here, which importantly means we can finally stop teasing who Asema might be.
Batman News Critic: Jackson
Nightwing #125
Tensions between Commissioner Maggie Sawyer and Nightwing erupt as both investigate a mysterious death. But the shocking revelations they uncover will shake both of their convictions and force them to reassess their allegiances.
Written By: Dan Watters
Art By: Francesco Francavilla
Thoughts: Could you even say that the revelations are so shocking that nothing will ever be the same again?
Batman News Critic: Aaron
Catwoman #75
Discover the ruinous event that sounded the death knell for Evie Hall and her compatriots and gave birth to Catwoman as we journey back to the beginning of the end of it all.
Written By: Torunn Gronbekk
Art By: Patricio Angel, Fabiana Mascolo
Thoughts: I wish I could get into this globetrotting adventure of Selina’s more.
Batman News Critic: Akash
DC x Sonic the Hedgehog #2
The Justice League has some startling new allies: Sonic the Hedgehog and his friends! Together, they fight the invading forces from Apokolips to save Sonic’s world from Darkseid’s devastating ambitions. But can even their combined might be enough to stop a New God? Who will make the ultimate sacrifice for the greater good? You won’t believe the cataclysmic finale!
Written By: Ian Flynn
Art By: Adam Bryce Thomas
Thoughts: Seems a bit early to be teasing the “cataclysmic finale” in only issue 2 of 5.
Batman News Critic: Chip
Titans #22
He’s the world’s deadliest mercenary and the Titans’ oldest and most dangerous enemy. He’s also dead…or at least we thought he was dead. Yeah, we’re talkin’ about Slade Wilson, Deathstroke, now back from the dead, building a new team of villains, and ready to take on the Titans. How did he do it? Find out in this can’t-miss issue!
Written By: John Layman
Art By: Daniel Bayliss
Thoughts: Deathstroke can’t die! He’s one of the three stories that the Titans can tell.
Batman News Critic: None
Beyond the Bat
Welcome to Beyond the Bat, where we take a quick look at the rest of DC’s comics coming out this week.
Graphic Novel Watch
No bat graphic novels this week; DC’s going all in on Superman.
Ratings
Most Excited: Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #38– It’s a crossover, but Waid is writing both sides of it so I hope that helps it all fit together really well.
Least Excited: Titans #22– There’s only so many Titans vs Deathstroke stories you can read.
Wild Card: Nightwing #125– It’ll be interesting seeing Watters flesh out Nightwing’s supporting cast
Well that’s it for this week! Let us know in the comments what comics you’re looking forward to.
