Welcome back to Upcoming Comics! I don’t have too much to say as we continue on in the second month of All In, so I’ll do something unusual and plug the competition coming out this week. By far my favorite comic coming out right now is Ultimate Spider-Man, and I highly recommend it to anyone with any interest in the character. The main Spider-Man title has been very not good for the past decade or so, and part of that is that they constantly revert back to a status quo that no one’s really happy with. Ultimate Spider-Man gives fans the adult Peter Parker they’ve been asking for, and does so amazingly spectacularly really well. The characters are fully realized, Jon Hickman’s storytelling is some of the best in the business, and Marco Checchetto’s art is absolutely gorgeous. I don’t know how long it will last, but I hope Marvel takes its popularity as a sign that this is what people have wanted in the main title.

Upcoming Comics

Batman & Robin: Year One #2

Dick Grayson is struggling to adjust to his new life as Bruce Wayne’s ward, with both Bruce’s rules and Batman’s training making his life difficult. But Dick is happy to remind Bruce that turnabout is fair play. Gotham’s newest crime boss, the General, continues to vie with Two-Face for control—but could an alliance benefit both of them and spell trouble for Batman and Robin?

Thoughts: This has gotten off to a really strong start, though it’s really hard to not constantly compare it to the incredible Robin: Year One

The Question: All Along the Watchtower #1

Who watches the Watchtower? In the wake of Absolute Power, the Justice League Unlimited has created a haven for all heroes—but can they keep it secure? Enter Renee Montoya, reeling from an abrupt end to her time in Gotham and looking for a place to hang her hat. But the Trinity didn’t bring her up to the Watchtower to relax—there’s a dark threat bubbling underneath the surface, and only the Question and her ad hoc support team stand a chance of figuring out who the problem is before it’s too late.

Art By: Cian Tormey

Thoughts: Some day, DC will figure out what they want to do with Renee. Maybe this title will be that day.

Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #33

Eclipso’s reign of terror has brought the Justice League to the brink of civil war…but there must be a way to break the spell! The answer lies within the very power source that allows Superman to race faster than a speeding bullet…It’s a battle for Earth’s yellow sun in the dramatic conclusion of “Darkness Falls”!

Written By: Mark Waid
Art By: Adrian Gutierrez

Thoughts: I have to be honest, my enthusiasm is waning on this series. Part of it might be Mora’s departure, and it’s certainly still good, but it’s also not the highlight of the month that I felt it used to be.

Batman: Full Moon #2

Caught in a world of magic and myth, Batman must rely on the help of Zatanna and John Constantine if he’s to save his city…and himself…from the curse of the werewolf. But with a full moon approaching, will the ancient magics Bruce’s allies manage to summon be enough to keep the beast away from Gotham’s most vulnerable? And can the werewolf’s human half ?nd the salvation he so longingly desires?

Written By: Rodney Barnes
Art By: Stevan SUBIC

Thoughts: We were just having a conversation about how it’s weird when Batman is skeptical of supernatural stuff, and his friendship with two literal sorcerers is certainly part of that.

Catwoman #70

In search of clues regarding the bounty that’s been placed on her head, Selina travels to Berlin hoping to reconnect with one of her old accomplices from her days as a roaming international thief. But it seems not even her cache of disguises and tricks can protect Catwoman from the watchful eyes of those hunting her. With deadly assassins coming out of every nook and cranny, Selina’s chances of uncovering the secrets of her unseen enemy seem slim. Can Catwoman ?nd out who exactly wants her dead, and why?

Written By: Torunn Gronbekk
Art By: Fabiana Mascolo

Thoughts: Last issue was certainly a step up from the last run, but I’m still waiting to see where this one will be going.

Titans #17

It’s a new day in the DCU, and the future is bright! Why, then, are the Titans looking backward, reliving their most horrific and traumatic moments, again and again, stuck in an endless loop? And who’s the temporal tyrant behind this time-bending torment? Here’s a hint: Time will tell.

Written By: John Layman
Art By: Pete Woods

Thoughts: “Why are the Titans on a loop, reliving the same moments over and over again?” I’ve been saying that for years.

Batman News Critic: Andru

Dark Knights of Steel: Allwinter #5

Slade finds himself wrenched from the icy jaws of death by the only thing worse than a sworn enemy: an old friend who knows all his greatest shames and darkest secrets. Secrets that hold the true origin of the Allwinter, that he’ll have to face down if he ever hopes to set things right. The question that lies before the bloody mercenary is not whether he can…but whether he will.

Written By: Jay Kristoff, Tom Taylor
Art By: TIRSO, Riccardo Federici

Thoughts: It’s funny that a title with “Dark Knights” in the title has almost just become a Slade comic.

Beyond the Bat

Welcome to Beyond the Bat, where we take a quick look at the rest of DC’s comics coming out this week.

Graphic Novel Watch

Sometimes you need more than floppies. Sometimes you want something that can sit nicely on your shelf that proudly displays your favorite stories. That’s when you turn to graphic novels. Let’s see what bat collections are coming out this week:

Ratings

Most Excited: Batman & Robin: Year One #2– The series got off to a really strong start and I think Waid is doing a great job exploring this era of Batman and Robin’s career

Least Excited: Titans #17– This title is going to need to put in a lot of work to make it feel worthwhile to me

Wild Card: The Question: All Along the Watchtower #1– Renee has not had a great go of it the past few years, but every new title is a chance to turn it around.

Well that’s it for this week! Let us know in the comments what comics you’re looking forward to.
