In “Daredevil: Born Again,” Vincent D’Onofrio plays Wilson Fisk, the Mayor of New York City and the Kingpin of Crime, but there’s apparently another, much different comic book role he’s interested in. D’Donofrio wants to play Alec Holland, aka Swamp Thing.

Yesterday, in response to a fan on X asking him what character outside Wilson Fisk he’d want to play, D’Onofrio answered simply, “Swamp Thing.”

As CBR points out, this isn’t the first time D’Onofrio has shown interest in the role. Back in 2023, D’Onofrio reposted a link to a CBR article fan-casting him as Swamp Thing, captioning the post with “Love this.” That would be enough to get it plenty of attention, but it attracted even more fans when James Mangold – who is developing a “Swamp Thing” movie – liked the repost.

Then, last year at the 2024 Dragon Con, D’Onofrio mentioned again that he wanted to play Swamp Thing and has been a fan of the character since he was a child.

The bad news is that last time we heard anything about James Mangold’s “Swamp Thing,” there wasn’t a lot of forward momentum. At the end of February, DC Studios co-head James Gunn mentioned it as part of the DCU projects that seemed relegated to the back burner, saying, “We talk about it occasionally.”

Should D’Onofrio ever get the chance to play Swamp Thing in live-action, he won’t be the first actor to do so. Ray Wise and Dick Durock played the character in the films “Swamp Thing” and “The Return of Swamp Thing,” and Durock reprised the role for an early nineties TV series. Andy Bean and Derek Mears would later play the role in a 2019 “Swamp Thing” TV series for the short-lived DC Universe streaming service.

Whether or not D’Onofrio ever gets to play Swamp Thing, it’s a safe bet he’ll have a home in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Wilson Fisk. He recently returned to the role for “Daredevil: Born Again,” whose Season 1 finale will be streaming next Tuesday on Disney+. Sadly, D’Onofrio also recently claimed that he can’t appear as Fisk in MCU movies because of rights issues; dashing any hopes that he might make an appearance next year in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.”
