With the DCEU ending in 2023, James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU is now laying its foundations. This shared universe is described as a “broad but not blanket reset,” and its first television series, Creature Commandos, debuted in December 2024. However, both Gunn and Safran stated that they see the upcoming Superman film, previously titled Superman: Legacy, as the true beginning of the DCU.
While the mostly positive critical reaction to Creature Commandos‘ storytelling, animation, and performancessuggests that the DCU has a promising future ahead of it, DC video game fans should look at Superman‘s release in July for a better idea of what to expect from the franchise moving forward. After all, beyond sharing the same IP, the film’s fate is directly intertwined with any future video games set in the DCU.

The DCU’s Video Game Potential Is Largely Contingent on Superman’s Reception
Gunn and Safran affirmed, in an interview with IGN, that the DCU will have connected video games, though they are still a few years from launch. Safran mentioned that, while there will be a bit of a wait for these games, he and Gunn have “had some pretty active involvement in some stuff coming up,” which is significant since “it’s really the first time it’s ever been this way at Warner Bros.” To coincide with this, Gunn even expressed interest in a DC version of Marvel Rivals and confirmed that, in the meantime, more DCU characters would be promoted and featured in Fortnite.
Unfortunately, some recent film and video game adaptations of DC material have had mixed receptions, leading to financial losses. Among those adaptations are Rocksteady’s Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which earned a generally unfavorable user score of 3.4 on Metacritic, and WB Games Montreal’s 2022 release, Gotham Knights, which also received lukewarm responses. WB Games responded to these losses by scrapping unreleased titles based on The Flash and John Constantine and shutting down MultiVersus entirely. Similarly, it was announced, in February 2025, that Monolith’s Wonder Woman had been canceled and that Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and Warner Bros. Games San Diego would all be shut down.
While the idea of new DCU-inspired video games is exciting, the recent actions of Warner Bros. suggest that the future of those games will likely depend on the success of the Superman reboot. Though unverified reports from early test screenings indicate the film delivers as a proper successor to the DCEU and the dawn of a new era, this doesn’t guarantee Superman will garner positive reactions from critics or audiences when it officially releases. If the film doesn’t do well, it’s unlikely that any tie-in games will make it much further than the planning stages. At the very least, Anthony Carrigan, who plays Metamorpho in the upcoming movie, has openly expressed his excitement about Gunn’s reboot, calling it a joy “to work on a project like that.”
While DC video game enthusiasts wait to see what happens with DCU-inspired games, they can keep a watchful eye on Superman‘s progress. A new trailer is expected to be released soon, and the film’s debut is less than four months away. April 18 may be a date to note, as it marks Superman Day and the anniversary of his debut in Action Comics #1. If the movie performs well, fans might even get a chance to see the DCU take a crack at a full-fledged Superman game.
