Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Green Lantern Corps #1
A new era for the Green Lantern Corps has arrived, reaffirming that a major DC villain will always be one of the greatest Green Lanterns ever. Following a major upheaval to the Emotional Spectrum in the DC Universe, the Green Lantern Corps is now much smaller and yet more free to protect and defend the universe as they once did. However, this new chapter also sees the Corps welcoming none other than Sinestro back into its ranks.
After the United Planets’ Lord Premier Thaaros ordered the destruction of every Central Power Battery in the Emotional Spectrum, the Green Lanterns resisted. Now, a new day has now dawned for the Corps, focused on restoration and rebuilding the Corps back to the numbers it once had and largely being led by Jessica Cruz and her fellow Lanterns from Earth. However, the threat of new “Fractal Lanterns” has created the perfect opportunity for the recently re-deputized Sinestro to prove that he’ll always been one of DC’s greatest Green Lanterns of all time.
Sinestro Is Back Wielding A Green Power Ring
Recently Deputized As A Green Lantern Once More
After losing the Yellow Central Power Battery and his empire on Korugar, Sinestro briefly wielded the red light of rage in previous issues of DC’s Green Lantern. Now, Green Lantern Corps #1 by Jeremy Adams, Morgan Hampton, and Fernando Pasarin features Sinestro returning to the green light of willpower he originally wielded before forming his own corps powered by fear. Seeing how the Corps’ numbers are currently quite thin it’s been decided that the Lanterns need all the help they can get, especially with the new “Fractal Lanterns” who are emerging due to the Emotional Spectrum’s current instability.
Essentially, Fractal Lanterns are beings who can wield the various lights of the Emotional Spectrum simply by feeling certain feelings strong enough (no ring required). This means that the galaxy is now full of ticking time bombs with untrained beings who likely won’t be able to control the constructs they inadvertently create out of rage, willpower, fear, or otherwise. Such is the case on Tarmaran in this new issue with an explosion of fear energy, explaining why Sinestro is being brought on the case.
Sinestro Has A True Command Over Both Willpower and Fear
Making Him One Of The Greatest Green Lanterns
Although Green Lanterns are chosen for their ability to overcome great fear, Sinestro is next level. Hardly concerned by the destructive yellow constructs being formed by the terrified Tamaranian girl named Vexar’u, Sinestro proves his skill as a master of both the green and yellow lights of the Emotional Spectrum. He recognizes that fear is not something to be avoided, but should be embraced as a weapon to keep one’s mind sharp, while also being a master of willpower with the determination to achieve his goals, as well as using it to harness his fears rather than letting them overtake him.

Guy Gardner Is Now My Favorite Green Lantern and Yes, I’m Dead Serious
As someone who has always hated Guy Gardner, I can’t believe he’s become my new favorite Green Lantern, surpassing even my beloved John Stewart.
To that end, the new Green Lantern Corps #1 does feature an incredible moment where Sinestro walks through a yellow energy barrier created by Vexar’u as if it was nothing, a testament to his power and experience as both a Green and Yellow Lantern in the DC Universe. As such, it’s pretty hard not to see Sinestro as one of the greatest Lanterns in the entire DC Universe. Sinestro’s intimate understanding of fear enhances his power and ability as a Green Lantern, and the same is true when going in the other direction as well.
Sinestro Is Already Ushering In A New Era For The Green Lantern Corps
Recruiting The Fractal Lanterns
Beyond his impressive command over the green and yellow light of the Emotional Spectrum, it’s Sinestro who encourages the Green Lantern Corps’ new ongoing practice of recruiting these Fractal Lanterns as new members. As such, John Stewart and more members of the Green Lantern Corps agree with the Korugaran. As a brand-new protocol going forward in this new era, The Green Lantern Corps will now find and induct new members themselves, rather than relying on the original methods the rings simply seeking out new recruits.
It’s going to be fascinating to see just how long Sinestro will remain a Green Lantern as this new series continues. After all, Sinestro has returned to the green light of willpower before, only to revert to the yellow light of fear. Perhaps he intends to one day rebuild the Sinestro Corps, just like the Green Lanterns who are currently working to rebuild and restore their ranks. That said, it would be pretty exciting if Sinestro simply remained a Green Lantern for an extended period of time in the DC Universe.
Green Lanterns Corps #1 is now on sale from DC Comics.
