Zack Snyder is known for creating epic superhero movies based on the characters from DC Comics. So it’s not surprising that the filmmaker chose Watchmen when asked to pick a favorite.
Speaking to ComicBook, Snyder explained why he picked the 2009 film, based on the limited series of the same name by Dave Gibbons and Alan Moore. “I would have to say Watchmen, probably for me, just like the process of adaptation from comic book to movie design, all the things as we went from comic books to movie,” he said. “I think Watchmen is like the cleanest, and kind of most satisfying, transition to adapted material.”
10 Strongest Teams The Power Rangers Can Beat
The Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers have faced some strong enemies, proving they could take on other powerful teams like the Teen Titans or the TMNT.
Snyder also shared his reasons for not picking any of his other DC films. “Well, weirdly, I kind of look at it in two ways. Like one, I think, of course, Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Justice League, is its own thing,” he explained. “I don’t know necessarily whether it’s a comic book movie in the classic sense, for me. But I can understand how people would say that because those are comic book characters and whatever, but, that’s just based on ideas that I had about comic book characters.”
Watchmen is directed by Snyder from a script by David Hayter and Alex Tse. Set in an alternate 1985 during the height of the Cold War, the story follows a group of mostly retired American superheroes as they investigate the murder of one of their own, only to stumble upon a complex and dangerous conspiracy that ties them all together.” The cast includes Malin Akerman, Billy Crudup, Matthew Goode, Carla Gugino, Jackie Earle Haley, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Patrick Wilson.
Snyder’s film received mixed reviews. However, Katee Sackhoff, who voices Laurie Juspeczyk/Silk Spectre II in the animated Watchmen Chapter 1, is a fan. “Zack Snyder’s was a phenomenal interpretation,” the actor said in a recent interview. “I loved it. I loved it. It’s part of why I wanted to do this, because it inspired me. I think that for fans of the book, this, this feels important, this feels true to the storytelling. That’s what, I think, people will love about it. I think they’ll really enjoy this.”
RETRO REVIEW: 38 Years Later, Watchmen Still Pushes the Boundaries of Superhero Comics
When Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons created Watchmen, they didn’t just satirize superheroes; they also challenged the conventions of comic book stories.
Snyder’s next project is a prequel series based on his 2006 film 300. The filmmaker recently offered an update on the show, saying, “We’re just getting ready to dive in and get to work on it. It’s super fun. I love the world. And even just in the preliminary meetings, we’ve had talks about, like, ‘What if this happened or that happened.’ Just a lot of… It’s just really fun to like go, wow, it’s a rich standard. It’s similar to this [Twilignt of the Gods] in a weird way, as far as there’s a lot of underpinnings.”
Watchmen is currently streaming on Prime Video.
