[#item_full_content] [[{“value”:”Over the course of the last decade, DC Comics has been working to increase LGBTQIA visibility in its mainstream comics. This included reimagining Alan Scott (the original Green Lantern from the Golden Age) as a gay superhero and making Superman’s son, Jon Kent, bisexual and in a same-sex relationship. Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy are now a couple, and fan-favourite Robin, Tim Drake, is now also bisexual and in a same-sex relationship.
More recently, under the leadership of (newly promoted) senior editor Andrea Shea, DC has been increasing trans visibility with new characters Dreamer and Galaxy. Dreamer’s Supergirl actor, Nicole Maines, has been instrumental in increasing her character’s presence in the mainstream comics. Likewise, fellow trans creator Jadzia Axelrod is now working to make Galaxy a fixture in the main DC Universe. This is most evidenced by the newly concluded Justice League: Dream Girls Pride event.

Whilst DC has made significant progress with increasing LGBTQIA visibility both on and off the page, there are still areas of improvement. One of those is DC committing more strongly to the idea of Selina Kyle being a bisexual antihero after she was explicitly confirmed as such during Genevieve Valentine’s New 52 Catwoman run. She’s even been depicted as bisexual in 2022’s The Batman, so the comics need to catch up. Additionally, since DC decided not to marry Batman and Catwoman in the main DC canon, there’s no reason why Selina can’t be given more queer storylines.
Another character that DC could more strongly commit to depicting as a queer hero is Wonder Woman, especially given her iconicity and background. Interestingly, this is one area that the Absolute Universe can maximise more than the main DC canon. Aside from the fact that Absolute Wonder Woman is a new hero starting out for the first time, she’s already come in contact with another Justice Leaguer who is historically not her love interest but has great chemistry with in the Absolute Universe: Zatanna Zatara. Since artist Hayden Sherman already posted an image of the two for Pride Month on his Instagram, DC should absolutely do something with that.”}]]
